Nervous, pt 2

Posted in Uncategorized on 21/08/2008 by arihn

On September 18 I am giving a reading up at Kent State for the Wick Poetry award thingy. It’s at 4:00 pm. I’m not much of a reader, and I’m pretty nervous already.

My biggest fear is that their microphone will be placed too high, and I will cause all kinds of commotion trying to adjust the world to my height.

Nervous

I just sent a submission to The Writing Lab Newsletter.   Kind of a big step for me, and I did it rather impetuously (ie, quickly written and without peer reviewing).  Could be a recipe for disaster, but also kind of exciting.

There was an article a few months back in which the author said tutors should basically ignore the role race plays in academic writing.  In 1500 words, I chose to disagree.

television

Spending the day at the grandparents, eating cookies and watching television.  Ironic commentary on Russia’s invasion of Jordan; apparently it is bad for a large nation to unilaterally invade a smaller one.  Who knew?

Also been “enjoying” the militaristic metaphors that dominate Olympic coverage, plus the gloating, showboating, and shaming that follows any US win, no matter how small.  Not watching much, though.  Did not realize that Water Volleyball was now an Olympic category.  Did manage to catch part of Cuba’s women’s volleyball team beating the US, though.

Strange find

I Google-search my name from time to time (ie, every time I’m online), to see what poems or websites pop up.  The other day, I found some poems I submitted maybe two years ago to the Young People’s Socialist League.  Their journal went on hiatus for some time, and just now got released, with three of my very old, very poor poems in it.  It was very strange to see old work, and I felt a bit embarrassed by it.  At the same time, it’s obvious I’ve grown since as a writer, and that makes me happy.

Life is Slow

Lots of quiet time at home.  Very little reading is getting done, but a good deal of writing is happening.  And even more relaxation.  Jogging when I want, naps with the dog.  Occasional beer.

I’ve decided to begin working on a chapbook for the fall.  I’ve been toying around with what I want to include; right now, it sits at 15 poems on 18 pages.  I’m pretty pleased so far with the work, and have my usual high hopes.  The plan is to send to Wick, for the student contest, or maybe to Pudding House, depending.

Work at the Writing Center is slow, but also exciting.  I’m totally pumped for the fall; we have a lot of exciting stuff going on in there, and the energy is high.
